The Kitanodai Gagaku Orchestra was established in June, 1982 for the purpose of educating and raising the level of aesthetic sensibilities of young people and to promote Japanese culture abroad through Gagaku, an ancient art of Japan.

From its inception, the orchestra was given lessons by the late Mr. Fumitaka Tohgi, formerly the Director of the Music Department at the Imperial Household Agency.

The orchestra is presently engaged in various activities such as Gagaku/Bugaku workshops, concerts, and performances at schools and community events.
